Undergraduate, Honours and Postgraduate Diplomas full-year course registrations

The position in regard to the payment of tuition fees on cancellation of registration for an individual course or for a year of study is as follows:

  1. If cancellation of registration takes place within the first two weeks of the first semester (deadline of 16 February 2020), no tuition fee is payable.
  2. If cancellation takes place between 17 February and 31 March 2020, the student is liable for payment of 25% of the tuition fee.
  3. If cancellation of registration takes place from 1 April to 26 July 2020, the student is liable for 50% of the tuition fee.
  4. If cancellation of registration takes place after 27 July 2020, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

A student who registers in the first semester for a course(s) that commences in the second semester may be permitted to substitute such a course(s) with an equivalent course(s) provided that they do so within the first two weeks of the second semester.

Undergraduate and Honours semester course registrations

The position in regard to the payment of tuition fees on cancellation of registration for a semester course is as follows:

Registration for Semester One Courses

The position in regard to the payment of tuition fees on cancellation of registration for a first semester course is as follows:

  1. If cancellation of registration takes place within the first two weeks of the first semester (deadline of 16 February 2020), no tuition fee is payable.
  2. If cancellation takes place between 17 February and 31 March 2020, the student is liable for payment of 50% of the tuition fee.
  3. If cancellation of registration takes place after 31 March 2020, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

A student may be permitted to substitute equivalent courses only in the first two weeks of the first semester.

Registration for Semester Two Courses

The position in regard to the payment of tuition fees on cancellation of registration for a second semester course is as follows:

  1. If cancellation of registration takes place within the first two weeks of the second semester (deadline of 26 July 2020), no tuition fee is payable.
  2. If cancellation takes place between 27 July 2020 and 9 August 2020, the student is liable for payment of 50% of the tuition fee.
  3. If cancellation of registration takes place after 10 August 2020, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

A student may be permitted to substitute equivalent courses only in the first two weeks of the second semester.

Registration for Online Courses

The position in regard to the payment of tuition fees on cancellation of registration for online courses is as follows:

a) Intake 1

  • If cancellation of registration takes place within the first 5 days of registration, (between 13 January and 17 January) no tuition fee is payable.
  • If cancellation of registration takes place between 18 January and 01 March, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

b) Intake 2

  • If cancellation of registration takes place within the first 5 days of registration, (between 09 March and 14 March) no tuition fee is payable.
  • If cancellation of registration takes place between 15 March to 26 April, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

c) Intake 3

  • If cancellation of registration takes place within the first 5 days of registration, (between 04 May and 08 May) no tuition fee is payable.
  • If cancellation of registration takes place between 09 May to 21 June, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

d) Intake 4

  • If cancellation of registration takes place within the first 5 days of registration (between 29 June and 03 July) no tuition fee is payable.
  • If cancellation of registration takes place between 04 July to 16 August, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

e) Intake 5

  • If cancellation of registration takes place within the first 5 days of registration (between 24 August and 28 August) no tuition fee is payable.
  • If cancellation of registration takes place between 29 August to 11 October, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

f) Intake 6

  • If cancellation of registration takes place within the first 5 days of registration (between 19 October to 23 October), no tuition fee is payable.
  • If cancellation of registration takes place between 24 October to 06 December, the student is liable for 100% of the tuition fee.

Postgraduate (Masters by Dissertation and PhD) registrations

Registration for this category of candidates takes place from 02 January to 30 September 2020.

For cancellation of registration please consult your Faculty Office before approaching the Fees Office with regards to possible rebate/s.

Postgraduate (Masters by coursework and Research Report) registrations

For a candidate registering in January, cancellation of registration will be applicable as per 1.1 above. For a candidate registering in July, cancellation will be applicable as per 1.2.2 above.

Only in exceptional cases is a substitution of equivalent course(s) permissible in the first two weeks of the semester.

University of the Witwatersrand Fees ancillary to tuition

A student who cancels his or her registration remains liable for payment in full of any ancillary charges.

Late registration

A student is required to register with the University during specified periods of each academic year. In exceptional cases, the Dean of the faculty may permit a late registration fee as follows:

Postgraduate (Masters by Dissertation and PhD) candidates may only register from January to September (see Faculty for details).

Postgraduate (Masters by coursework and Research Report) candidates may only register in January and July (see Faculty for details).

Equipment surcharge

Students are liable for the cost of replacing apparatus or equipment lost, broken or damaged by negligence or wilful misuse and a surcharge may be imposed by the head of the department concerned for breakages caused through negligence or irresponsible action by students.

Examination fees

The tuition fees include the fees for the ordinary University examinations but no refund can be made to a student who does not write the examinations. The fees for re-examination are as follows:

a) A candidate whose thesis or dissertation or Research Report has to be re-examined after revision is required to pay a re-examination fee as follows:

b) A student who registers for a course for examination purposes only will be charged one third of the tuition fee for that course. A student who registers for a course for non-examinationpurposes will be charged two thirds of the tuition fee.
