It is very important that students register the relevant Teaching Methodology each year of registration with the applicable Teaching Practice module of the academic level. For your second and third levels, this means that you must select two modules from two of the teaching fields under the school subject group. The modules and their respective Teaching Methodologies are:
Teaching field (Select two from the below) | First level modules(2nd year of curriculum) | Second level modules(3rd year of curriculum) | Teaching Methodology |
Mathematics | MIP1501 MIP1502 | MIP2601 MIP2602 | TMN3704 |
Natural Sciences & Technology | NST1501 NST1502 | NST2601 NST2602 | TMN3705 |
Life Skills | ICA1501 IPS1501 | CSP2601 VAP2601 | TMN3703 |
Social Sciences | GGH1501 HSY1511 | GGH2601 HSY2601 | TMN3706 |
Additional Language Teaching Methodologies are required in the fourth year of the curriculum and are compulsory to meet the requirements of the qualification.
Bachelor of Education Applicants (UNISA Intermediate Phase Modules)
All three Bachelor of Education (BEd) qualifications are popular choices. As a result, the BEd is oversubscribed, which means that more applications are received than the spaces available for admission. As a result, not all applicants will be offered a space for admission. The BEd is, however, not the only route to becoming a teacher. Should your intention be to teach in the Senior and FET Phase, you can also follow an alternative pathway to teaching. You can apply for an alternative Bachelor’s program (i.e. BA, BCOM, BSc), should you meet the admission requirements and be admitted, you can then continue into the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This route will mean that you will be able to become a teacher in the same minimum of four years as the BEd students. It is advisable that you check the admission requirements for your intended PGCE to ensure that you register the correct combination of school subjects to meet the PGCE admission.
