Unisa merit bursary

The next application period for this bursary will open on 4 January 2025 and close on 31 March 2025.

Bursary conditions

  • Students must have obtained an average of at least 75% and above in their previous year of study.
  • The bursary is only awarded to South African citizens registered for a formal qualification in any discipline at Unisa.
  • The bursary covers tuition fees and prescribed textbooks only.
  • Awards will only be made if there is sufficient funding.
  • Students who received the bursary in 2020 do not need to apply. Such students must, however, meet the 75% average to be considered for the bursary in 2025.

Required documents

The following documents are required:

  • Copy of ID
  • Proof of household income
  • Parents IDs (for dependent applicants)
  • Academic record

MERIT BURSARY CRITERIA

The criteria for awarding of merit bursary are as follows:

  1. The bursary shall be allocated to all undergraduate formal qualifications;
  2. Students must have obtained at least 75% and above average in their previous year of study;
  3. Financially needy and the missing middle students qualify to be considered for the bursary (capped an annual family income of R600 000);
  4. Students must register for a maximum of five (5) modules per Semester and the equivalent for year courses;
  5. Seventy per cent (70%) of the funding will be reserved for students from a previously disadvantaged background who obtained 75% and above average;
  6. The bursary shall be limited to South African citizens;
  7. First-year students will not qualify for academic merit;
  8. Students who deregister or cancel their registration will be liable to pay back for the cancelled or deregistered modules;
  9. If the examination results of a bursar are such that s/he will not make 75% average, the bursar will be excluded from the bursary in the following year;
  10. By nature of the bursary, students will be required to complete undergraduate qualifications as per the University’s progression guidelines;
  11. The funds will be allocated proportionally across Colleges, based on the number of qualifying students;
  12. The bursary shall cater for tuition and prescribed books only.
  13. The Directorate: Student Funding will select and allocate the funding based on performance;
  14. Successful candidates will be notified by whatever means necessary and will be required to sign a bursary acceptance form; and
  15. Upon completion of studies and finding employment, the bursary recipients are encouraged to voluntarily make monthly and/or annual donations to the University’s bursary programme to support the next generation of students.

Department of Transport Bursaries

Closing date: 31 March 2025

Bursary criteria

  1. The bursary covers unemployed youth under the age of 35.
  2. Only students registered for the following qualifications will be considered:
    1. BCom in Transport Economics
    2. BCom in Logistics
    3. ND in Civil Engineering
    4. BTech in Civil Engineering
    5. Honours in Transport Economics
    6. Honours in Logistics
    7. Master’s in Transport Economics
    8. Master’s in Logistics
    9. MTech in Civil Engineering
  3. Should a recipient fail to successfully complete his/her studies, Unisa reserves the right to recall the money with interest at the going rate.
  4. Successful students will be selected by a selection committee.
  5. All returning bursary students must have passed 50% or more of their previously registered modules to be considered for new intake/funding.
  6. The following documents are REQUIRED:
    1. A certified copy of a valid Senior Certificate (if you have completed Grade 12)
    2. A certified copy of your latest academic transcript or record on official letterhead or with a logo (if you are already at university)
    3. A certified copy of a valid South African identity document
    4. Salary advise of the person responsible for your needs
  7. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered.

UNISA Bursaries for Honours Degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas

About the bursary

The honours and postgraduate diploma bursaries aim to assist students with their Unisa tuition fees, thus enabling them to register and complete their qualifications.

Financial support is offered to postgraduate diploma and honours students subject to eligibility, academic performance and availability of funds.

A selection committee will convene to consider applications and to decide on the amounts awarded to successful applications. The decision of the selection committee is final.

Bursary guidelines, terms and conditions

The UNISA bursaries awarded to postgraduate diploma and honour students cover tuition fees only.

  • The bursary is awarded to South African citizens registered for postgraduate diplomas or honours degrees in any discipline at Unisa.
  • Preference will be given to students who completed their undergraduate qualifications at Unisa.
  • The student must have obtained a 60% average, calculated on the basis of their entire undergraduate degree or honours modules for which they had registered previously.
  • The maximum term for completion of a postgraduate diploma or honours degree is three years. However, the student is funded for only the first two consecutive years of study; should the student not complete their studies within three years, the bursary amount awarded during the second year of study will be charged to the student’s account, which will be handed over to the Unisa legal department to affect the collection process.
  • Students registering for special study programmes, including certificates and non-degree purpose studies, are not eligible for this bursary.
  • Students who already hold a postgraduate degree at the same or a higher level are not eligible for this bursary.
  • Unisa gives no guarantee that the bursary will be awarded to all eligible students, as the bursary is subject to the availability of funds.
  • Re-application for the second year of study will be considered only if the student maintained an average of 60% for the first year of study.
  • A renewal bursary is granted only to students who are previous recipients of the Unisa postgraduate bursary and continue to comply with the relevant conditions.
  • Eligible returning students who do not re-register for the academic year will be in breach of the agreement governing the bursary. The current year’s bursary reapplication will be cancelled, and the amount awarded the previous year will be charged to the student’s account, which will be handed over to the Unisa legal department to affect the collection process.
  • The bursary will not cover modules that were previously failed.
  • If a student:
    • fails to comply with any of the conditions of the award, and/or
    • terminates their studies,

their Unisa postgraduate bursary will be cancelled and the recent, previous and/or current year’s Unisa postgraduate bursary amount awarded will be charged to the student’s account, which will be handed over to the Unisa legal department to affect the collection process.

Requirements

The following documents must accompany the postgraduate diploma and honours degree bursary applications:

  1. A certified copy of the applicant’s ID
  2. A copy of the applicant’s academic record (stamped and/or encrypted by the institution)
  3. Proof of registration
