CPUT Faculties
Applied Sciences Faculty
The vision of the Faculty of Applied Sciences is “to be the faculty of choice in science and technology, nationally and in Africa”. This is clearly aligned to the vision of CPUT which is “to be the heart of technology education in Africa”. We count it an opportunity for us in the faculty the relevance of all our current programmes to priority skills needs of government and industries. All our programmes are also relevant within the context of CPUT as a University of Technology. Also the applied nature of our academic programmes and research endear us to so many partners locally, nationally and internationally and to industries.
Business and Management Sciences Faculty
The Faculty of Business and Management Sciences is the largest faculty within CPUT. We are proud of our achievements over the years and continue to strive to provide academic excellence; operating at the cutting edge of our disciplines; creating and disseminating knowledge through high level research. Our students are taught by academics who are both actively engaged in industry, ensuring high programmatic relevance; and who are pushing forward the boundaries of discipline-specific knowledge.
Education Faculty
The Faculty of Education is located on the Mowbray and Wellington campuses of CPUT. Our core business is teacher education, with the bulk of our students in initial or pre-service teacher education, through the four-year Bachelor of Education. The rest of our academic offerings address educator development needs at pre-service and in-service level, undergraduate and postgraduate levels, through the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (for those who want to join the teaching profession after acquiring a degree other than education); and for those already with qualifications and experience in the Education field, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, the Advanced Certificate in Education, and Honours, Master’s and doctoral degrees.
Engineering & the Built Environment Faculty
The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment covers a broad range of engineering disciplines, which are currently being reformed to respond to the demands of regional, national and global industry priorities in engineering education. Through a range of multi-disciplinary research institutes and centres, the Faculty aims to integrate its education and research programmes into a cohesive system, providing students with modern technology platforms for relevant and industry-responsive education, with a high degree of work-integrated learning. These platforms include the Product Life Cycle Management Competency Centre, providing state-of-the-art education in product design through to simulation and life-cycle management, the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Laboratory, and the Centre for Substation Automation and Energy Management Systems, to mention a few. Through this approach, the Faculty aims to emerge as a major driver of socio-economic change in the region.
Health and Wellness Sciences Faculty
CPUT is in the process of introducing new qualifications and phasing-out old ones (such as the Diploma is replacing the National Diploma, and the Advanced Diploma replacing the BTech), as required by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training. The new qualifications are introduced to align with the new Higher Education qualification sub-Framework (HEQSF) as Gazetted by the South African Department of Education on 2 August 2013. This is a requirement placed on all Higher Education institutions in an attempt to keep the curriculum relevant.
