Rules: A student who has successfully completed this qualification will be able to teach from Grade R to 3. Teaching Practice is a compulsory component in this program and must be taken according to the specific criteria every year. Five weeks practical is required every year, and three weeks must be offered consecutively. This qualification comprises both semester and year modules. Year modules may only be registered during the January registration period of each academic year. Students must also register themselves with SACE (South African Council for Educators) from the first year of BEd registration. Please visit the SACE website for more information: https://www.sace.org.za/ With the migration from the non-aligned BEd to aligned BEd, transitional arrangements have been approved by the College of Education unique to this specific degree and is not transferable to any other qualification. | |
Purpose statement: The primary purpose of the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching is to ensure that qualifying graduates are able to facilitate Foundation Phase teaching and learning ethically, professionally and innovatively in in both rural and urban landscapes. Furthermore, on completion of the qualification, graduates will be able to implement and continuously adapt to national legislation / policies and guidelines governing and addressing Foundation Phase teaching and learning in a coherent and purposeful manner. The purpose of this qualification is also to ensure that graduates will be able to demonstrate an appropriate collaborative attitude and value the involvement of multiple stakeholders that contribute to Foundation Phase teaching and learning success. Qualifying graduates will also be able to administer and manage Foundation Phase teaching and learning effectively through best classroom practice in stimulating learning amongst Foundation Phase learners. The BEd is an initial qualification for educators in schools. Teachers are members of a profession whose definitive aim is to enable systematic learning. In order to prepare prospective teachers for this comprehensive role, the BEd programme seeks to: – Develop and consolidate in an integrated way appropriate disciplinary, practical, pedagogical and situational knowledge. – Cultivate a practical understanding of teaching and learning in a diverse range of South African schools, in relation to educational theory, phase and/or subject specialisation, practice and policy. – Foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers. – Nurture commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of teaching as a profession. – Develop the professional dispositions and self-identity of students as teachers. – Develop students as active citizens and enable them to develop the dispositions of citizenship in their learners. – Promote and develop the dispositions and competences to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts. It is assumed that students who achieve the exit level outcomes will be competent novice teachers who will still need time, experience and appropriate support to develop as fully-fledged extended professionals. | |

Who can register?
- Applicants may only register once they have received confirmation from Unisa that their application for admission has been accepted. Unisa reserves the right to not process and/or to cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification. Admission to the alternative qualification is not automatic. It will depend on whether you comply with admission requirements and if space is available.
- Re-registering students may register for the 2021 academic year once the registration period opens.
Please note: Should you wish to start a new qualification, please apply online for the alternative qualification during the prescribed application period.
How to choose your modules
Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester:
- For the 2021 academic year, you must register for your semester 1 and 2 modules by 12 March 2021. There will be no semester 2 registration period. No exceptions or registration extensions will be permitted.
- The maximum number of credits that will be allowed is 120 credits.
The maximum number of credits do not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.
You must take your available time into consideration when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately
- 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
- 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.

First level
Level Combination Rules:
Language choices are dependent on the Home Language on your matric certificate. You MUST continue
with the Home Language stipulated on your certificate. The First Additional Language option is
English if it is not your Home Language. If English is your home language, you can choose either an
African language or Afrikaans as your First Additional Language. The Second Additional Language
(Communicative Competence) is then from a different group to your Home Language and First Additional
Language.
Example 1: Home language on Matric certificate is Sepedi, so you will take Sepedi Home Language.
You will then choose the English First Additional language options and you can choose either
Afrikaans or another African language (other than Sepedi) as your Second Additional Language.
Example 2: Home language on Matric certificate is English, so you will take English Home Language
(ENG1515). You can then choose any African language or Afrikaans as First Additional language
options and you can choose either Afrikaans or another African language (other than the one chosen
as First Additional language) as your Second Additional Language.
Example 3: Home language on Matric certificate is Afrikaans, so you will take Afrikaans Home
Language. You will then choose English (ENG1514) as First Additional language options and you can
choose either any African language as your Second Additional Language.
Important: All modules in Group A are compulsory, Select One module from Group B (English) and ONE
module from Group C (Second Additional Language {Communicative Competence}).

ALL modules in Group A are compulsory, ONE module from Group B, either TWO modules from Group C OR
TWO modules from Group D.
Based on the module selected at FIRST LEVEL from Group B, (ENG1514 or ENG1515) select a
the corresponding module from Group B at SECOND LEVEL i.e. ENG1514 corresponds to ENG1516; ENG1515
corresponds to ENG1517.
If ENG1517 is selected from Group B, select any TWO modules from Group C from ONE language. If
ENG1516 is selected, select any TWO modules from Group D from ONE language. The modules selected
from Group C or Group D must be from the same language group, but may NOT be the same language
selected in Group C at FIRST LEVEL.
