UNISA BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Purpose: This module is primarily intended for members in the explosives industries who are in the middle to senior management position in the police, military, labour, health and safety and commercial industry. The explosive industry is a fast growing and highly technological industry which is continually subject to significant changes and renewal. This brings about specific risks and control considerations with a major impact on the different sectors in the industries. On successful completion of the module, students will be able to apply and use the elementary explosive technologies during manufacturing and other processes in an explosives environment. Students credited with this module will be able to supervise manufacturing processes and solve management problems on middle to senior management level in the explosives environment.

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to identify the principles of effective leadership in contemporary business organisations and to develop the learner’s understanding of the interrelatedness of leadership and management in order to achieve organisational goals. Contemporary issues in practicing leadership for success will be explained, namely leadership skills that are necessary in modern organisations, the role of leaders in workplace relations, the role of leaders in teamwork, the importance of leadership ethics, the formulation of leadership standards, and the evaluation of leadership performance.

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to provide learners with the necessary competencies to analyse the development of and rationale for global responsible business behaviour against a historical, sociological and economical background. Successful students will be able to apply the key terms, concepts, and theories related to the multifaceted field of corporate citizenship. The implementation of corporate citizenship initiatives will be evaluated, and the role of the African context in corporate citizenship examined. Considering the increasing international emphasis on corporate citizenship, the module is of value to the individual, potential employers, as well as society at large.

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to establish a foundation for the study of business management; and to develop the learner’s understanding of the concept of strategic management and of the specific management tasks (planning, organising, leadership, control). The module is designed to expose students to the dynamics of cross-border business involvement and galvanise the knowledge that students need to identify and understand the implications of international business environments for cross-border operations. It accordingly provides the necessary knowledge of and insight into external environmental influences that need to be considered in global strategic decisions, including decisions regarding cross-border trade, investment and operations. This module further attempts to explain basic global management processes and procedures, including those related to international trade, investment and financing.

Purpose: Managing within the new economy to obtain a competitive advantage, the changing role of the operational manager, operational planning, organize operational resources, monitor and control operation resources, operational decision-making and problem-solving, teams and performance, self management and industrial relations.

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to introduce students to both the theories and contemporary practices of Global Business Management and its dynamics in a strategic approach to managing business organisations that operate across borders. Accordingly, this module provides relevant information on and insight into the complexity of business operations in increasingly competitive and dynamic global business environments, the extent and nature of which were largely addressed in the module Global Business Management IA (MNB3701). The current module, and especially its dynamic approach to global leadership and management, devising relevant competitive global business strategies, structuring and managing global business operations, provides an exceptionally appropriate exposure to managers involved in or contemplating involvement in international business. Global business management is multi-disciplinary, and it touches on, inter alia, issues related to the behavioural sciences.
