Table 1: Pre-Selection Criteria

A preselection offer is withdrawn if the applicant’s performance in these four subjects drops below their performance in the Grade 11 results. The application is then returned to the general pool of applicants in which applicants will be considered on the basis of their Grade 12 performance only using the four subjects previously listed. Phase 2 Final selection

The second phase of selection is done soon after the GRADE 12 results have been released. Pre- selected students who either maintained or improved their Grade 11 SMU selection score are given substantive offers. Those whose scores fall below the level at which they received a pre-selection offer are then included in the general pool of applicants for consideration. In order for students to be selected from the main data pool they should comply with the following admission requirements:

1. Must achieve the minimum APS score of 35 as described above in Table 2
2. Compete on the basis of the four subjects in the preselection criteria. Students will be selected by order of merit using the percentage marks in these subjects: Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, English Language. These will be done on a demographic basis using the census data.
3. A first degree in Natural Sciences. An applicant with a degree may not be admitted into the ECP (extended curriculum programme)
4. Have excelled in First year BSc courses at SMU. Eligibility means the attainment of at least three distinctions during their first year.
5. A relevant matriculation or examination process that qualifies enrolment into a degree programme (for SADC nationals mainly Lesotho and Swaziland, with an APS to be determined by the enrolment committee on basis of Table 2). Sefako Makgatho Admission Requirements 2025/2026

A total of 250 spaces are offered during the second phase of selection based on the following distribution:

• 155 (One hundred and fifty) students
  this number comprises pre-selected students now given substantive offers on grounds of either having maintained their performance in the SMU Admission Score
  Students selected from the remaining pool of applicants from other school leaving assessments.
• Five (5) students from SADC sponsored by their governments (in terms of governments agreements, preference to be given to those from Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia
• Thirty (30) who have competed their First Degree at SMU. This includes students who have health professional degrees such as nursing, physiotherapy, dietetics and occupational therapy. Selection will be based on a calculation of points for each symbol.
• Five (5) students who have completed a first degree at another university.
• Five (5) sponsored by the South African National Defence Force

Five (5) students who have excelled in BSc or equivalent first year courses at SMU. These will be assessed on the basis of at least three distinctions and then in merit order. For general BSc (first year subjects) and for applicants from the extended curriculum programme in BSc using both ECP 1 and 2 averages. Please see detailed comments below.

• 50 MBChB-ECP 1 students who passed all the six Foundation Modules

Note:

1. Due to the limited number of places available and the competitive nature of the degree programme attainment of the minimum requirements stated in Table 1 does not guarantee admission.
2. Students attaining high SMU Admission Score not selected in among the top 150 are placed on a waiting list.

Phase 3 Selection into Medicine Foundation (MBChB-Extended Curriculum Programme)

Non-quantifiable measurable variables that include social background (schooling and rural origin i.e. quintile 1 and 2 schools, rurality and socioeconomic circumstances) form the core policy of selection of MBChB-ECP students. The MBChB-ECP programme is meant to address historical inequalities with regard to access to a medical career. Students are selected from all disadvantaged schools country wide such that selected candidates reflect the demographic (socio-economic) profile of the country. However, students from quintile 1 and 2 have equal chances of being selected to the six year programme if they meet the requirements presented in Table 1.

The Medicine Foundation Programme at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University is a one year course that prepares students for entry into the six-year medicine degree course offered by the university. The foundation programme focuses on developing the students’ knowledge in the sciences and study skills required when studying towards a medicine degree. The following modules are offered:

• Medical Foundation Biophysics and Numeracy
• Medical Foundation Biology
• Medical Foundation Biochemistry
• Medical Foundation English for Medicine.
• Medical Foundation Introduction to the Human Body (Anatomy and Physiology)
• Medical Foundation Study Skills and Information Management.

Eligibility

This programme is only available to students from disadvantaged schools who are South African citizens and are currently enrolled in quintile 1 and 2 schools during time of application who do not achieve direct entry into the six-year medicine degree programme. Applications that do not meet these criteria will be declined. The minimum academic requirements are presented in Table 3

A student may be selected with a score of 4 in either English or Life Sciences provided that the overall score is still competitive.

Duration: 1 year

Progression rule to the six-year medicine programme (MBChB)

The student must pass all the six foundation modules with a minimum of 50%.

Note: A student who fails any of the six foundation modules cannot repeat. There is no credit offered to such student.

Selection of an applicant with a previous degree

Applicants with a previous degree will be selected to fill the allocated quotas referred to in the list above. Matric will be used to look at certain/specified subjects. Applicants must have done Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) and Physical Science/Life Sciences at Matric level.

A basic calculation will be applied to the performance of these applicants. The resultant score will be used in descending order to select applicants from this pool.

The process of the calculation will be as follows:

• Each subject is awarded a score based on the percentage achieved as per the table below. The percentage will be rounded off to the nearest decimal
• In the event a subject has been completed as a supplementary result, the score awarded will be 0
• In the event of year of study being repeated or a subject being repeated in a subsequent year of study, all attempts at the subject are scored and each counts as a course for the purposes of this calculation.
• These are then added together and divided by the number of subjectsincluded
• The minimum score which will be considered eligible is 12

Selection of students following completion of first year at SMU

• BSc First Year students with Average Year 3 Distinctions.
• Maximum number of spaces is 5.
• This does not include candidates with BSc (Diet), BSc (Physio) etc, or those in an Extended Degree Programme (ECP) or those with a foundation course in any subjects. Students will only be considered at the end of their passed first year.
• Applicants will only be considered for MBChB I.
• Such a student must have distinctions (> 75%) in three full year subjects (e.g. Chemistry I) if taking 4 courses; or distinctions in four modular courses (e.g. Chemistry) if taking 8 modules / semester courses, or at least half of the year’s credits, to be considered for selection, and an average of 70%.
• Selection is on a competitive basis.

SHC B1 The BCur (007) and BNSA01 Programme

Selection and Admission Requirements

For practical reasons a limited number of applicants can be admitted to the degree programme. A Selection Committee therefore selects students on merit.

An applicant for the B Cur/BNSA01 programme must have

1. a National Senior Certificate endorsed for bachelor’s degree study (or equivalent school leaving certificate with full Exemption certificate .
2. an APS of at least 26;
3. passed in the following subjects at the following, or better levels of achievement

SHC B3 BACHELOR OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DEGREE PROGRAMME BOTA01 Selection and Admission Requirements

1. Students are selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar.
2. Students with a Bachelor’s Health Sciences degree or a BSc qualification will be considered for selecting if they meet the minimum requirements.
3. Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences students who are changing from other degree programmes will be selected on their academic performance.

National Senior Certificate (NSC) Applicants:

Applicants require the following minimum Admission Point Score (APS)

In addition to the University Rules relating to selection and admission, English must be at a minimum of 4 and Life Orientation at a minimum of 3.

SHC B4BSc (Dietetics) DEGREE PROGRAMME BDIA01 /004 – Old Curriculum BSc (Dietetics)

Selection and Admission Requirements

1. For practical reasons a limited number of applicants may be admitted to the degree programme. Students are therefore selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar.
2. Students who have been refused re-registration at any other University shall not be admitted to this programme.
3. Students who have been excluded from other courses or programmes at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University are not eligible.

SHC B4.1.2 Admission

Applicants must have the following minimum Admission Point Scores (APS)

In addition to the University Rules relating to selection and admission, English must be at a minimum of 4 and Life Orientation at a minimum of 3.

SHCB5 BSc (Physiotherapy) DEGREE PROGRAMME BPT01

Selection and Admission Requirements

1. For practical reasons, a limited number of applicants will be admitted to the degree programme. Students are selected on merit by a Selection Committee and notified accordingly by the Office of the Registrar.
2. Applicants who chose physiotherapy as a first choice will be given preference for selection.

Applicants must

1. have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) endorsed for bachelor’s degree study with the following minimum Admission Point Score (APS) a minimum of a 4 for English and a 4 for Life Orientation

Bachelor of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (BSLPA degree programme)

Selection and Admission Requirements

For practical reasons, only a limited number of applicants shall be admitted to the degree programme. Students are selected on merit by a SHCS selection Committee

The General Rules apply. A candidate must comply with the conditions and meet the selection criteria as determined by the Department. The following minimum selection criteria will be followed:

SOP B 1 B PHARM PROGRAMME (BPRA01)

Selection and Admission Requirements

SOP 1.1.1 National Senior Certificate Applicants

National Senior Certificate (NSC) applicants require the following minimum Admission Point Score (APS) as indicated in Table 1.

The APS for the candidate will be calculated by using the APS grade in Table 2. The candidates will be ranked according their APS. Sefako Makgatho Admission Requirements 2025/2026

SOP B1.1.2 Applicants who left school prior to 2008 (prior to National Senior Certificate)

1. Candidates who are in possession of a Matriculation Certificate of the Matriculation Board OR Certificate of Exemption from the Matriculation Examination granted by the Matriculation Board/HESA (Higher Education South Africa, now called USAf (Universities South Africa) with University Exemption must have passed Mathematics and at least two of the following subjects in higher grade (with a minimum symbol D) at matric level: English, Biology, Physiology or Physical Science (Table 3).
2. Candidates with Mathematics in the standard grade level who have achieved an A or B rating may be considered. Sefako Makgatho Admission Requirements 2025/2026

SOP B 1.1.3 Non-South African should obtain the following:

(I)A-Levels in the following subjects: mathematics, physical science, biology and English

SOP B 1.1.4 Mature Age applicants

Applicants without university exemption who have completed appropriate training within the requirements of the National Qualifications Framework will be considered (e.g. formally trained Post Basic pharmacist assistants, pharmacy technicians) provided that they are in possession of a matriculation certificate with the following subjects: Mathematics, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and English with a minimum APS level of 4 per subject.

SOP B 1.1.5 Graduates

1. Graduates with Health Sciences/BSc degrees will be considered only for enrolment into First Year. Graduates with degrees will be given preference over those with diplomas due to the higher National Qualifications Framework (NQF) ranking for adegree
2. Marks obtained during the degree will be scored according to Table 4 below: (Sefako Makgatho Admission Requirements 2025/2026)

Points are allocated according to the above table to all courses. The points will be summed and divided by the number of courses.

• Candidates with a total of 12 points qualify for selection process.
• Selection is on a competitive basis and a student’s average should be 65% in the final year.
• The time to complete the degree is also taken into account. A three or four year Health Sciences/BSc completed in the minimum time: two additional credits(+2)
• Honours Degree: one additional credit if achieved in minimum time (+1).
• Master’s Degree: one additional credit if achieved in minimum time (+1)

SOP B 1.1.6 Transfers from SMU and/or other universities

• Applicants with incomplete Health Sciences/BSc degrees will be considered only for enrollment into First Year. Preference will be given to applicants in the final year of their studies.
• Selection is on a competitive basis and a student’s average mark should be 65% and above including Matric (Grade 12) results.
• Each application will be considered by the Selection Committee and ranked based on their academic outcomes
• Students with degrees or studying for degrees will be given preference over those with diplomas due to the higher NQF ranking for a degree

SOP B 1.1.7 Selection Process

The B Pharm Selection Committee will screen all candidates who comply with the selection requirements. The candidates will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by the Office of the Registrar.

Successful applicants will be admitted into first year level

General information for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC): All students admitted to the first year of study must register with the SAPC before 31 March of the relevant year. Please contact the School of Pharmacy for further information.

Sefako Makgatho School of Science and Technology Admission Requirements 2025/2026

The School offers the following extended BSc degree curriculum programmes

Admission to BSc‐ECP (Extended Curriculum Programme)

An applicant must have obtained

1. an NSC with a Bachelor endorsement;
2. a minimum APS of 24
3. the following minimum APS per subject:

Any two other NSC subjects with a minimum NSC score of 4 each

• SSTB1.2 Admission criteria other than the above shall comply with Rules as described for the BSc Programme.
• SSTB 2 The curriculum for the BSc-ECP Programme shall extend over four years and be composed of a combination of modules that include two majors.
• SSTB 3 The Dean may in exceptional circumstances and on the recommendation of the head of Department exempt a student who is repeating a module from the practical component of that module.

Bachelor of Science (normal)
