About the National Film and Video Foundation: The NFVF is a statutory body and an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture. The main objectives of the NFVF are to increase the accessibility of South African films; to increase the number of films in South Africa and the number of producers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds; to increase the amount of training within the film industry and in scarce skills areas; to locally and internationally promote the film industry of South Africa.

Details of National Film and Video Foundation Bursary Application 2025/2026

Field of Study

  • Film and Television

National Film and Video Foundation Bursary Application Requirements 2025/2026

1) National bursary:
The cover will be provided for tuition fees only – 1st-year students will receive full funding, and the following years of study will receive 80% funding. Students are NOT required to pay back or work back the bursary.

2) International bursary:
The cover will be provided up to a maximum of R250 000 (which includes cover for tuition fees and living expenses).

National Bursary:

    • South African citizen
    • Completed Matric

Achieved a minimum average of 50% in the 2019 year of study

    • Registered or provisionally registered to study full-time towards a Film/ TV qualification (undergraduate or postgraduate diploma or degree) (NOT performance arts and acting courses)
    • Registered or provisionally registered to study at an accredited South African tertiary institution (preference will be given to public tertiary institutions)
    • Proven financial need (total gross income of less than R600 000 per year)
    • Strong academic record

Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students

International Bursary:

  • South African citizen OR South African permanent resident
  • Intend on studying at an international tertiary institution for a postgraduate Film/ TV qualification (NOT performance arts and acting courses)
  • Studying a course that is not available in South Africa
  • Apply 6 months before the start of the course (starting in January 2021)
  • Proof of strong academic merit within your field of competency
  • Strong academic record

National Film and Video Foundation Bursary Application Procedures 2025/2026

Applications must be done online at https://nfvf.praxisgms.co.za

National Bursary:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate or latest academic results (certified copy)
  • Proof of tertiary acceptance/acknowledgement of your application (on tertiary letterhead)
  • Annual academic fees breakdown (on tertiary letterhead)
  • A motivational letter stating why you should be awarded a bursary (1 page)
  • Under 21 years old: parents/ guardian/ spouse proof of income (latest payslips/ latest bank statement)
  • Over 21 years old: student’s proof of financial support (latest payslips/ latest bank statement/ social grant/ affidavit if unemployed)
  • If in receipt of other private or public bursary funding: a statement indicating the amount and details of the funder
  • Curriculum Vitae

International Bursary:

  • ID document (certified copy)

  • Covering letter (with a personal motivation for study, how your studies will be relevant to your intended career path, and how the skills acquired will benefit South Africa)
