Insurance policyholders are entitled to file for their benefits after an event occurrence. The process by which a policyholder formally requests an insurance company for coverage or compensation for a covered loss or policy event is termed as claim.

The AVBOB Insurance Company has a simple but robust claim system. Aside from knowing the process through which you can request your claim, we will provide you with detailed information on insurance claims in general.

How to Process AVBOB Insurance Claims [2025 Update]

MAKING A CLAIM ON YOUR AVBOB POLICY

AVBOB know that a burial or cremation costs a lot, so you need the pay-out from your AVBOB Funeral Policy to help with all the expenses. Here are some useful guidelines you can follow to make sure your claim is processed quickly.

DEATH FROM NATURAL CAUSES

  • You will need to give AVBOB all previously listed documents. PLUS:
  • The driver’s licence of the person who died and the result of the person’s blood alcohol test (if he/she was the driver in a motor vehicle accident)
  • A certified copy of the post-mortem report
  • A copy of any court findings or judgements

PLEASE NOTE: Some of these documents can take a long time to get. If that happens, your claim might take longer to process.

DEATH DUE TO UNNATURAL CAUSES

You will need to give AVBOB:

  • A filled in “Disability Medical Report” (ask your AVBOB agent for the form that needs to be completed)
  • A medical report saying how the person got disabled
  • Proof that the person’s employment was ended
  • The person’s sick leave records from their employer

REMEMBER: Written notice of a claim like this under the policy must be sent to the AVBOB Head Office as soon as possible. Your AVBOB agent can help you with this.

HOW TO CLAIM YOUR R3 000 FREE CASH BENEFIT FROM AVBOB INSURANCE

WITH AVBOB YOU GET AN EXTRA R3 000 CASH UPFRONT* TO HELP WITH EARLY FUNERAL PAYMENTS

At AVBOB, they put our members first. That’s why, if you have an AVBOB funeral policy*, they give you FREE member benefits* that include an extra R3 000 cash payment before your claim is paid out. The R3 000 extra payment is their way of helping you take care of any payments you need to make quickly when arranging a funeral.

Best of all, this R3 000 extra cash payment is in addition to what your policy pays out, so it does not lower your claim amount.

WHO CAN GET THE R3 000 EXTRA CASH BENEFIT?

FREE early cash payment of R3 000* to the person arranging the funeral of the insured person who died. This early payment can be used for whatever expenses.

If you want to be able to get this FREE member benefit* there are just three things you need to do:

  1. You must get AVBOB Funeral Service to do the funeral.
  2. You must have cover for the person who died on your AVBOB funeral policy for at least two years (24 months).
  3. You must pay your policy premium every month.

The person who arranges the funeral will get paid the R3 000 cash. Usually, this will be the policyholder or if the policyholder has passed away, the beneficiary named on the policy will get the payout. But, if someone other than these two people arranges the funeral, the money will get paid to them.

HOW WILL THE MONEY BE PAID?

The money will be paid by Instant Money Voucher. This is just like cash because you get a voucher number and PIN-code sent to your cell phone. Then all you need to do is go to a Standard Bank ATM or your nearest SPAR to withdraw the cash.

HOW TO DRAW THE MONEY FROM A STANDARD BANK ATM

Anyone can draw the money from a Standard Bank ATM using the voucher and PIN. You don’t need to be a Standard Bank customer. Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to your nearest AVBOB Funeral Service branch to arrange the funeral.
  2. AVBOB Funeral Service will check if the policy you are claiming on is 2 years or older so that you can claim the R3 000 extra cash benefit.
  3. If you can get the benefit, the AVBOB Funeral Service agent will take down your details and cellphone number and request the payment on our system.
  4. You will get an SMS with the voucher number and a PIN-code on your phone. Make sure you keep these numbers safe because anyone who has them can draw the money.
  5. Go to your nearest Standard Bank ATM with your phone.
  6. At the ATM choose “Collect Voucher”.
  7. Key in the voucher number and PIN-code that was sent to your phone.
  8. Take your money.
HOW TO DRAW THE MONEY FROM YOUR LOCAL SPAR

WHEN WILL THE MONEY BE AVAILABLE?

As soon as you get the SMS with the voucher number and PIN-code you can draw the money. If you don’t draw the money straight away, you have up to 3 months to do so. After 3 months, if you have not drawn the money, you will lose it.

HOW MUCH MONEY MUST YOU DRAW?

You MUST draw the full R3 000 in one go. The voucher number and PIN code are only valid for ONE transaction.

ARRANGING A FUNERAL

AVBOB understand that when a loved one dies it is a difficult time for you. That’s why AVBOB will help you to make the burial or cremation arrangements. You just need to follow these five steps:

STEP 1: MOVING THE BODY OF THE PERSON WHO DIED FROM THE PLACE OF DEATH TO A FUNERAL HOME

Call your local AVBOB agent or dial 0861 28 26 21. AVBOB funeral agents are available 24 hours a day – 7 days a week, and will advise you on what you need to do.

STEP 2: ARRANGING THE BURIAL OR CREMATION

You can arrange the burial or cremation at your local AVBOB funeral agency, or you can request that an AVBOB funeral agent come see you at your home. Even if the person who died is to be buried or cremated in a different town or city, to where they died, you should still contact your nearest AVBOB funeral agency to help you with the arrangements.

Remember: As part of our FREE member benefits*, AVBOB provides FREE transport of the body of the person who died within South Africa.

STEP 3: SET A TIME AND DATE FOR THE BURIAL OR CREMATION

Your AVBOB agent will ask you what day and time you want the burial or cremation to take place.

STEP 4: REGISTER THE DEATH

It is law in South Africa that all deaths must be registered. AVBOB will do this for you, but we will need you to give the following to AVBOB:

The Notice of Death (this is form DHA-1663). You will be given this form by a doctor or other medical expert who confirms the death.

The identity document or ID smart card of the person who died.

STEP 5: DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT FOR THE BURIAL OR CREMATION

There are a number of decisions you will need to make about the burial or cremation. It is best to speak to the family members of the person who died before deciding. That way you can be sure that everyone is satisfied with the service. You can also check if the person who died left any instructions which could have been included in their Last Will & Testament.

THE DECISIONS YOU MUST MAKE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
  1. Must the person be buried or cremated?
  2. Where must the burial or cremation service be held? Not only the town or city, but also the place, like a church, chapel, or at the graveside.
  3. Should there be a memorial service and if there is, who is the minister or other religious leader who should conduct the service?
  4. What type of flowers should there be at the service, and what must be done with them after the service?
  5. Do you want to tell people about the burial or cremation in the newspaper?
  6. Who will carry the coffin/casket?
  7. Do you want leaflets handed out at the service? How many must be printed? Do you want them in colour or black and white? What information do you want in the leaflets?
  8. The type of coffin or casket?

These are just some of the things you will need to think about. There may be more decisions you need to make. Your AVBOB agent will help and guide you. It may be hard to think about all these things, but by doing so, you will make sure that you give your loved one a dignified send-off. (AVBOB Insurance Claims)
