About the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences: The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a centre for research and education within the mathematical sciences field – based in Cape Town, South Africa. AIMS was founded in 2003 and currently has 3 different bursary opportunities for postgraduate students.

Masters studies (Half Bursary)
PhD studies (Half Bursary)

African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Bursaries Application Requirements

Masters and Doctoral studies at the AIMS Research Centre:

South African citizen,
Studying towards a postgraduate qualification in Mathematical Science,
Preference will be given to students with a disadvantaged background, however, all students are welcome to apply.

Masters studies (Half Bursary):

AIMS graduate who wishes to undertake PhD studies at a recognised South African University,
University will pay an equivalent amount towards the bursary,
University will bypass the fee difference for international and local students,
Studies will begin in the February of the upcoming year,
Students will do a max of 10 hours of tutoring/ week.

PhD studies (Half Bursary):

AIMS graduate who wishes to undertake PhD studies at a recognised South African University,
University will pay an equivalent amount towards the bursary,
Studies will begin within 8 months of the AIMS programme being finished.

Masters and Doctoral studies at the AIMS Research Centre:

Proposal of intended study (max 2 pages),
Academic record to date,
Short CV.

Masters studies (Half Bursary):

Confirmation to study within the Masters programme and confirmation of a half bursary award (with the bursary amount) – letter from the proposed supervisor,
Proposal of intended study (max 2 pages),
Short CV of the supervisor (if not already supervised prior AIMS students).

PhD studies (Half Bursary):

Confirmation to study within the Doctorate programme and confirmation of a half bursary award (with the bursary amount) – letter from the proposed supervisor,
Proposal of intended research topic,
Short CV of the supervisor (if not already supervised prior AIMS students).
