About the Meat Industry Trust: The Meat Industry Trust (MIT) administers the scheme via its Bursary Working Committee (BWC). The BWC is made up of a team of people who represent the research fraternity, the interests of the industry and has knowledge about the Tertiary Institutions. Prof Norman Casey has been chairing the committee since the beginning of 2019, he succeeded Prof Theuns Erasmus who led the committee the previous 3 years.

The BWC liaises closely with the Tertiary Institution and the relevant Head of Department and/or Supervisor under whose guidance the student will conduct the post graduate study (Masters or Doctorate).

VALUE of the SCHOLARSHIP

The bursaries are R60 000 per annum. The total for a Master’s Degree will be a maximum of R120 000 for 2 consecutive years of study, while a Doctor’s Degree will be a maximum of R180 000 for three consecutive years of study.

The awarding of a scholarship is not regarded as a guarantee that the allocation will again be made in successive years. This will depend on proof of progress as confirmed by the Supervisor and re-registration at the Tertiary Institution.

CRITERIA for a BURSARY AWARD

Are you a South African citizen ?
Are your proposed studies at an accredited Tertiary Institution ?
Do you qualify for post-graduate studies, i.e. do you have a four-year degree from a South African Tertiary Institution that will qualify for admission to study towards a master’s degree ?
Or if you already have a master’s degree, will you qualify for admission to study towards a doctorate degree ?
Do you meet the requirements for the post graduate institution where you want to apply?
Will you be a full time student during your studies ?

PROJECT LIFE CYCLE

Read through the criteria and if you qualify, then…
Apply for funding by completing the application form
The BWC will review your case, and you will be informed of your success or otherwise
An ‘Agreement’ will be signed between the student and the BWC to formalize if you were successful
Funds are released
The project is initiated
Student submits a Final Progress Report at the end of the project’s life cycle
The project concludes
